De Harmony Patrician H 1407 uit plm. 1965 welke
ook zonder element aangekocht kan worden. Het
betreft hier een zogenaamde "Johnny Smith" mini-
humbucker, welke dezelfde specs heeft als een
standaard Mini humbucker van Gibson. SOLD.
Ik heb om de gitaar geheel intact te laten een plugingang
in het klankgat gemaakt. Een andere extra kan ook een
vrij onzichtbare versie van een potmeter zijn welke wel
een prettige extra is natuurlijk.
Ook zou er een uitsparing in de slagplaat gemaakt moeten worden
voor dit element. Nu nog niet gedaan. Ik wacht de wensen van de
eventuele koper eerst maar af. Het is snel genoeg aangebracht.
Het element werkt helemaal naar behoren en ik heb dit model
naast een Gibson ES 125 gehouden ter vergelijking. Qua geluid
kun je je een hoop geld besparen door deze gitaar aan te schaffen.
Degelijk, massieve materialen, goed gebouwd, prettige hals
en goed fretwerk.
The Chicago based factory of Harmony made a lot guitars
under the "Patrician" name. It was their high end serie. This
one is the H -1407 but after about 1965 they installed an
adjustable truss rod. In fact a good move as at the same time
they added a slimmer profile for the neck that doesn't feel
that "chunky' anymore. Scale: 640 mm. Width at topnut:
45 mm.
Though some surface damages on the solid soundboard
I'm planning to keep it that way. The pickguard is still
there but a small piece on top of it had broken off due
to the screw that has been overtightened a bit.
The guitar must have had some accidents as the tuning
axles for the D and G string were bent. I solved it by at
first heating the plastic knob with a hair dryer in order
to remove it and then heating the axle with a soldering
gun and then gently bowing it back. But they are mediocre
so my advise would be to replaced them. As a buyer
wishes them to be replaced, I have a set of Gibson
style tulip button tuners in new condition.
There are some problems with the neck attachment but
luckily the neck wasn't tight to the body anymore and
had some give. That makes it possible to inject some
water to release the neck from the body, make a proper
fit and reglue the neck in place while controlling the
neck / body angle at first! This guitar can be dated
between 1965 and 1971, the year when they stopped
producing this model.
The neck separation wasn't a big problem and after that
it is meticulously cleaning all glue surfaces but before
that the regluing of the inner heelblock to the sides and
back. Luckily Harmony used a sturdy constuction.
Mostly called dovetail I recently stumbled onto the
expression "ducktail". Anyway you can clearly see
what is ment by that. Still in workable condition.
Here the open gap can be studied. That was the first
step to take. Gluing these parts (inner block with sides
and top firmly together! But at first you have to make
sure the angle neck / body will be correct after the
gluing process. In fact this was the moment to do
a neck reset that worked out wonderfully well!
The back of this guitar is still in a very good
condition. Just cleaning with Nikco did miracles!
The heel is tight against the body now.
I've refinished the guitar in this area to make things
look smooth again.
The "made in USA" truss rod cover and
a newly made topnut.
And the other side of the outer heel. As for the fingerboard
on the soundboard itself: It is better not to entirely glue that
to the sides. In this manner cracks along the fingerboard
can be prevented according to Mr. Jose Ramirez III.
Op verzoek van een geinteresseerde: Een foto van de onderkant
van de gitaar dus daar waar het staartstuk vastgezet is. Tevens
voorzien van een knop voor een draag band (origineel zo!)
Ook de informatie over actie kan potentiele kopers helpen
bij een eventuele beslissing. De maten zijn genomen vanaf
de bovenkant fret naar de onderkant van de snaar: 3 mm
bij snaar 6 en 2,5 mm bij snaar 1. Overigens is het bij dit
soort gitaren veel gemakkelijker om de brug te verlagen
in vergelijking tot de Spaanse (klassieke) gitaren.
Het element waar nu de slagplaat deels overheen loopt.
Zoals ook gebruikelijk bij de Gibson gitaren van dit
model is een uitsparing de oplossing. Ik wil echter deze
originele slagplaat niet "verzagen". Er kan beter een
andere slagplaat met uitsparing voor gemaakt worden.
Voor de input van het element is gebruik gemaakt
van een van de F-klankgaten. Er kan indien gewenst
een volume regelaar tussen gezet worden. Deze wordt
onder de slagplaat weggewerkt. Het betreft dan een
klein plat wieltje dat niet in het zicht zit maar wel
gemakkelijk bediend kan worden.
